BDL Welcomes New Members to the Team

We are pleased to welcome Gavin Ray onto our engineering team to kick off 2019. Gavin completed his B.S. and M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, where he was involved in a joint cookstove project between the Engineers Without Borders UW chapter and Burn Design Lab. His first task as a BDL fellow will be finding ways to extend the Jikokoa stove’s life through the implementation of thermal barrier coatings, as part of our ongoing ELS project. Gavin is excited to put his engineering knowledge to use in a field where his contributions can have a positive impact. He is looking forward to learning about the non-profit sector and furthering his understanding of the cookstove industry. Gavin is a martial artist in his free time and he plans on returning to Taekwondo after an upcoming knee surgery. In the meantime, he is excited to explore Vashon Island, his new home.

Garrett Starr is a recent graduate of the University of San Francisco’s Environmental Studies and Philosophy programs. A lifetime Vashon Islander, he is excited to return to the Island and help increase the visibility of Burn Design Lab at home. As a development and research fellow, he aims to bring his experience as an academic research assistant and his penchant for creative writing to BDL’s outreach efforts.
