Tagata Stove - Burundi

Tagata Stove - Burundi

In Burundi, BDL is supporting the refinement and scale-up of the Tagata stove, a locally manufactured biomass pellet stove produced by women-led KTF Concept in Bujumbura. Designed to replace charcoal in urban households, the Tagata stove uses agricultural waste such as rice husks and coffee residues to provide a cleaner, more efficient cooking alternative.

With funding from EEP Africa and technical support from BDL, KTF Concept plans to expand production of the Tagata stove to reach 5,000 households, impacting more than 27,000 people and reducing an estimated 62,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

Phase 1, Dec 2025 - 2026:

  • Scoping visit to Bujumbura, Burundi
  • Evaluate existing stove design and manufacturing system
  • Offering initial recommendations on design based on lab/field performance testing, user research, durability observations from stoves already in use, and ease-of-manufacturing.
  • Equipment and tooling recommendations, factory layout, and optimized workflow for increased production capacity
